Champagne - October 2003
Compiègne |
|
|
We have a row of vines in Champagne, through 3D Wines, so it was time to pop
over to France to pick up some of our own Champagne. Of course we
made a trip out of it, and spent a few days touring Northern
France.
Compiègne Château, above, was built for Napoleon I, as a small
weekend retreat, so he could live like the peasants.
Compiègne is also famous for the Armistice signing of
WWI. |
Laon |
Pierrefonds |
We'd stopped at Laon before, so we
knew it was a good place to stay the night. |
Couldn't resist stopping the car for this view, even though we
were already late to pick up our Champagne. |
Amiens |
|
Amiens Cathedral is the largest Gothic church in
France, It's said that Paris's Notre Dame Cathedral could fit inside it.
Saint-Leu, below, was called My Little Venice by
Napoleon I.
Amiens also boasts the Hortillonnages, former marshland, now
market gardens accessible only by canal.
