France - Côte d'Azur |
Côte d'Azur - February 2003
Nice |
Stroll along the promenade des Anglais, or sit
outside a nearby bar and watch the world go by, the French Riviera
has one of the highest Poodle populations in the world.
Stray away from the beach, and find bustling squares, during the
Mardi Gras carnival the big Ferris wheel is well worth a ride. |
Beaulieu
Just along the coast from Nice, Beaulieu is a great
place to relax by the marina, or spend a few hours visiting the
mad Villa Kerylos, a re-creation of an ancient Athenian house,
where the archaeologist owner actually lived for 20 years. |
Monaco - Monte-Carlo |
In Monte-Carlo we raced a few laps of the
Grand Prix circuit in our Twingo, I managed to drive the route
from memory, even though I had never visited Monaco before. |
While in Monaco we also visited the
Jardin Exotique, with it's exceptional collection of huge cactus,
and it's grotto. It's also a good place for a view down over
the Royal Palace and the ground of Monaco FC. |
La Turbie |
Roquebrune |
The monument is a reminder of imperial Roman power. |
Drive along the Grand Corniche from Nice to Monaco,
and you'll pass Roquebrune, stop though, for a look at the castle
and take in the excellent views from the battlements. |
Vence |
The medieval walled hilltop city of Vence sits on
the edge of Provence, and is a great place go wandering round the
narrow streets. |
Ventigmilia |
Villefranche-sur-Mer |
We popped over the border into Italy for a night to sample the
local pizza! |
Just east of Nice, Villefranche has an excellent Fort
overlooking the bay. |
