Mistras - Greek Travels
Inhabited from Byzantine times right up until the 1950's when the last inhabitants were
relocated, Mistras is an incredible place, in which once over 40,000 people lived and
worked
It meanders up the hillside, and the visitor wonders up steps, and along winding
streets past houses, churches, and monasteries until finally they reach the very top of
the hill where the castle is situated. The castle presents an excellent vantage
point to view the town below, and to pick out the route you have taken to the top, but on
the other side there is a altogether less hospitable view; that of the sheer rock face
falling steeply away.
There are several churches and monasteries, some of which have beautiful frescos.
The only inhabitants left in Mistras are the nuns at the convent of Pantanassa.
