In the pretty village of Benington are the lovely gardens of Benington Lordship, and
within the grounds are the ruins of a Norman castle. The castle was destroyed in the
early 13th century by followers of King John. In the 19th century a landscape
gardener designed the gardens around the remains of the castle, incorporating the old
flint walls into the mock Norman Gatehouse. The gardens are especially popular in the
early Spring when they are renowned for the snowdrops which grow there, but it's a lovely,
peaceful place to visit anytime. |
