Dunnottar

Dramatically set on the top of a steep rocky outcrop sits Dunnottar Castle, near
Stonehaven, dating from the 9th Century. The castle withstood months of siege before
Cromwell's troops captured it in 1652, but they still failed to find the hidden Scottish
Crown. |
Dunvegan
Dunvegan Castle, overlooks Loch Dunvegan, in the north west of the Isle
of Skye. Home to the Clan MacLeod since the 1200's, the castle is still inhabited by the
MacLeod's over 20 generations later.
The castle contains the 'Fairy Flag' - a sacred banner of the Clan said to posses
miraculous powers, clan treasures, and the 'Speckled Bagpipes'. |

Eilean Donan

Sitting romantically in Loch Duich in the Highlands of Scotland is Eilean Donan
Castle, it is accessible by a bridged causeway. This stronghold of the McRae Clan
dates from the 13th Century, when it was a refuge from the Vikings. The castle but was
ruined by English Naval bombardment in 1719, when it housed a garrison of Spanish troops,
allies to the Jacobite cause, it was restored in the 1930's.

Seat of the Dukes of Argyll, chiefs of the Campbell Clan, Inveraray Castle was completed
in 1790 to replace an original 15th Century castle.The turreted castle, built in Gothic
revival style, is today still home to the current Duke of Argyle. |
Urquhart Castle, which was once Scotland's largest, sits on a promontory on the western
bank of Loch Ness. It dates from Norman times, and was ruined in 1692 to prevent
Jacobite occupation.Commanding views over the majority of the loch it is a favoured
location of monster spotters. |
