First built in 1100, Framlingham Castle was largely rebuilt in the 16th
century, it's walls remain intact and impressive. Framlingham has had a varied history, as
well as a fortress, it's been a prison, a poorhouse and a school. The castle's most famous
resident was probably Mary Tudor, who stayed here while awaiting the news as to who would
succeed Edward VI to the throne, she or Lady Jane Grey. There is a walkway around the
top of the castle walls, linking nine of the thirteen towers and the views from here, over
the lake and the countryside are lovely. |
