Port Douglas
For this leg of the trip we were based in Port Douglas, north of Cairns. From
here we visited Kuranda, Mossman Gorge, Daintree and the Great Barrier Reef, we also
spent some time at The Rainforest Habitat in Port Douglas.
Our hotel was situated just off Four Mile Beach, shown here from the lookout at the top of
the hill in Port Douglas. |
The Radisson Treetops Hotel, where the rainforest is just outside your window. |
Ellis Beach |
The drive from Cairns to Port Douglas has some lovely scenery and beaches,
including the long, sandy Ellis Beach. |

|
Kuranda |
|
|
The Skyrail cable cars take you high over the rainforest, with a couple of stops to
get out and take a closer look. At the top is the village of Kuranda with
craft shops, markets, a butterfly park and a Noctarium. The return trip can be made by
cable car or by the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway, which opened in 1891. It's not what
you would call a quick trip - it took about 2 hours to wind it's way down the 34km route. |

Mossman Gorge |
|
Mossman lies north from Port Douglas and is a small sugar
beat town. However, more interesting is the Gorge just outside town, which leads up
the river and has excellent walking tracks, including a 3km circuitous path. There
are several calm swimming holes, and also some rapids. |
Daintree |
|
Bats |
|
From south of Mossman up to Cooktown is the area of wet tropical
rainforest called the Greater Daintree. We took a trip on a small electric boat
(very quiet) down the Daintree river, our guide showed us many birds, nests, and creatures
who live along the river. |
