Our arrival in the States at LA Airport was a rather rude awakening, after
the friendliness of everyone we had met in the South Pacific, we almost felt like going
straight home. San Francisco seemed much more welcoming, even though our Taxi driver
told us of all the towns problems, as they are wont to do the world over. |
|
Next morning the skies were blue and we set off from the Hotel Diva to
explore the city.

We took the Cable Car down to Fisherman's Wharf and spent some time
getting used to crowds again on Pier 39! We walked past the Historic Ships, and
Maritime Museum to Ghirardelli Square, then took an old Blackpool tram to the Embarcadero
to view the Bay Bridge. |

Golden Gate Bridge |
Luckily for us, our boat trip coincided with a clearing of the mist that
often obscures the bridge, leaving us with great views. The Golden Gate Bridge,
designed by Joseph Strauss and measuring 6,450ft (1,966m), was completed in 1937 at a cost
of $35 M. |
|
The bridge is painted a colour called International Orange,
and keeping it pristine, is a never ending task for it's team of painters.

|
The boat took us close to Alcatraz Island, just one and a half miles from
shore, the island is infamous for it's period as a maximum security prison from 1934 to
1963, when it housed the likes of Al Capone and the Birdman. |
