Henry Joseph White and Elizabeth Blanche Grigg were married at Sandown Parish Church on the Isle of Wight in September 1893. At the time Henry was a Leading Seaman in the Royal Navy.  They had six children: Leonard, Harold, Gertrude, Muriel, Oswald and Jack.

Henry Joseph White

Henry Joseph White was born in 1866 on the Isle of Wight. He was the son of Hannah (nee Beere) and, I think, Frank White. According to census information he had five younger siblings: Ernest, Edith, Oliver, Flora and Hilda.

In 1881 he joined the Royal Navy and on his Naval Record was described as having brown hair, hazel eyes and a fair complexion. He remained in the Navy for several years, serving on various ships, at some point on the same ship as King George V. In about 1900 he was transferred to the Coast Guard Service and his postings took him to Rosmoney (Ireland), Brancaster (Norfolk) and to Northumberland, where he served at Bamburgh, Seahouses and Newbiggin.  The family eventually settled in Newbiggin.

He died in March 1946 and is buried at St. Bartholomew's in Newbiggin by the Sea.

Elizabeth Blanche Grigg

Elizabeth Blanche Grigg was born in September 1870, the second of the three daughters of Fanny (nee Kenway) and William Symons Grigg.

Both Elizabeth and her elder sister Kate, were born in Bridport, Dorset. Their younger sister, Gertrude was born in 1877 by which time the family had moved to Carisbrooke on the Isle of Wight.

Elizabeth died in 1934 and was buried at St. Bartholomew's Church, Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland.

The White Family

The White Family

The picture shows (left to right): Jack, Muriel, Elizabeth, Henry, Oswald and Leonard White.   Missing from this family group are the two other children; Gertrude and Harold.  I know that the three younger children were all born in Northumberland and the eldest, Harold, was born in Norfolk, but I'm not sure about Gertrude and Len.  The family eventually settled in Northumberland, having lived originally on the Isle of Wight.
Oswald and Muriel stayed in Newbiggin, Jack returned to the IOW where he married and raised his family.
Gertrude and Len both emigrated to Canada: Gertrude married  Frederick Cox and had three sons. Len (after whom my father was named) married Olive (nee McGurk) and they had two children; Elizabeth and (John) Leslie.
Harold, a Master Mariner, settled in Gwent, Wales.  He married Ethel and raised two sons, James and Peter
