Willaim Symons (Symonds) Grigg |
William seems to have moved around the south coast quite a
bit. Born in 1844 near Barnstaple in Devon, he was the son
of a Blacksmith. On the 1851 census he is in Sherwill with
his parents and siblings and also his mother's father John Symonds
. Presumably his middle name comes from his grandfather.
By the time he marries Fanny Kenway in 1869 he's moved to Dorset
and gives his place of residence as Allington. Their three
eldest daughters are born in Bridport, but sometime between 1872
and 1877 the family move to the Isle of Wight.
Another baby girl is born in 1877, which sadly is also the year that
William died of Pulmonary Consumption at only 32 years of age. |

Joseph and Fanny Rackett
|
This photograph was taken at the studio
of Ernest A. Kime in Newport, Isle of Wight and shows Fanny (nee
Kenway) with her second husband Joseph Rackett.
Four years after the death of her first husband William Grigg,
Fanny is shown on the 1881 census living in Carisbrooke with
her three daughters and gives her occupation as
Dressmaker.
Ten years later, on the 1891 census she has remarried and is
living in Crocker Street, Newport with Joseph, his 10 year old son
Henry and her youngest daughter Gertrude. Also with them is
Kate, Fanny's eldest daughter who married James Arthur Clark in
1890, and their baby daughter Ethel Blanche.
|
Grigg, White, Waterman and Fleming are some of
the names of the people shown below - I would be glad to hear from
anyone who can identify the people or locations |
|
|
Seated on the left of this photo are two of the Grigg
sisters; Elizabeth and Kate. Next to Kate is
Elizabeth's husband Henry Joseph White. Immediately behind
Elizabeth is her youngest daughter, Muriel White and next to her
stand Rob Waterman and his wife Ethel Blanche, nee Clark who is
Kate's daughter. The identities of the other people are
uncertain. Approx date of photo: 1925. |
It's likely that the lady in the centre of this
photo is the youngest of the Grigg sisters; Gertrude. I'm
still looking for references to her after the 1891 census,
but this lady certainly appears on a lot of the old family photos.
The man on the right of the photo is Henry Joseph White and
next to him is his daughter Muriel. This photo was probably taken in
1836. |
