John Armstrong and Jane Isabella Dawson
My paternal Grandmother's parents Jane Isabella Dawson and John Armstrong were married in
February 1904 at St. Mary's
Church, Woodhorn, nr. Newbiggin.
Their witnesses were William Watson and Robert Dawson - who I think would be Jane
Isabella's brother.
Jane Isabella and John had four children; Jane Eleanor,
Edward, John William and William John. John William died in infancy, and just to confuse
matters William John, my great uncle was always went by his middle name, "John".

John Armstrong (c1863 -
c1925)
(no photo available)
John Armstrong was born in 1863, the only child of Ellen and John Armstrong. Both his parents died within five days of each other during September 1864.
He was brought up by his paternal Grandparents Elizabeth and John Armstrong. In the 1871 census he is nine years old and as well as his grandparents there are his uncles; Edward, Henry and James, all fishermen, his aunt Martha and two cousins John and Mary it must have been a very busy household. By the time of the 1891 census he is living with his Aunt Martha Uncle John
(Armstrong) and their equally large family.
Most of the men in the families of my Newbiggin ancestry were fishermen, working on the traditional "cobles". They tended to marry within the fishing community and John was no exception when in February 1904 he married Jane Isabella Dawson. The fisher families of Dent, Dawson, Taylor, Brown and Armstrong feature
widely in my family tree, with some of the others like Jefferson, Renner and Robinson making appearances too.

Jane Isabella Armstrong
(nee Dawson)
(1869 - 193?) |
Jane Isabella Dawson
Jane Isabella Dawson was born in June 1869 in Newbiggin, the fifth child of
Jane (nee Armstrong) and Robert Dawson. Christened
at St. Batholomew's Church, she was one of seven children, the second to be called by that
name - the first Jane Isabella died in 1867, before reaching her third birthday. Her
older siblings were William John, Robert and Edward, and her younger sister and brother
were Alice and Bartholomew Redford Dawson.
Her sister Alice is also one of my Great
Grandmothers, this time on my mother's side. Jane Isabella, nicknamed "Bella
Flat-Hat" died sometime in the 1930's.
