Andros - Greek Travels
Ahhh,
we went to Andros for our honeymoon, we stayed in Batsi, another of those picture postcard
bays.
Whilst not having the major historic sites of some other islands, Andros has much of
interest to see. We hired a car for a few days, and did some exploring.
We went in search of the monastery of Panachrantos. The map led us upwards and
away from the surfaced roads, around hairpin bends on steep gradients, we were just about
to give up when I caught a glimpse of a building down a seemingly sheer drop, and we had
found it. We were welcomed by the monk who lives there, he showed us the icons in
the church, and then offered us coffee, and Turkish delight before we left.
We had a couple of 'misses', we never did find Paleocastro where legend has it that the
old woman who betrayed the Venetians who lived in the castle threw herself in remorse,
from the walls on to the rocks below. And at Aghios Petros, an ancient tower
possibly dating from the Mycenaean period, we failed to notice the hole in the ceiling of
the low entrance - which contained the steps to the higher levels, and is also thought to
be a defensive feature - anyone entering is forced to stoop, making them an easy target.
Some other places we visited were Paleópolis, Andros Town, and the natural springs at
Apikia. We also took the ferry to the nearby island of Tinos.
