The ancient Greeks seemed to choose the most spectacular sites on which
to build, and Epidavros is no exception. It was built as a sanctuary to Asclepius the
healing god, legendary son of Apollo.
The theatre is built into a natural bowl on the hillside, and boasts not only the most
wonderful acoustics, but also an excellent view over the surrounding area. It
merges in so well with the hillside, that it was only last century that it was
re-discovered.
Seating 14,000 people on 54 tiers, the theatre has near perfect acoustics, and is still
used today. |
