 Barnard Castle 
 The town of Barnard Castle lies on the banks of the River Tees where an
    ancient Roman ford crossed the river. The castle which the town grew up around was first
    fortified in the eleventh century. It was the stronghold of the Ballioll family, a member
    of which built the circular tower which still survives. Nearby is the Round Tower where
    the emblem of Richard III, one of the later owners, can be seen. The castle sits high above the river and the views from the walls are
