Norfolk - Castles
Burgh
Only the impressive outer walls remain of this Roman fort built during
the 3rd century to protect against Saxon Raiders. Only three of the walls remain, but
the collapsed wall permits excellent views over the broads towards Berney Arms Windmill,
another English Heritage property.
In the photograph Burgh church is just visible through the gap in the wall. |

Castle Acre
|
Castle Acre is more famous for it's excellent Priory, however, as the
name of the town suggests, it does have a castle too. Originally a Norman manor house
the castle gained earthworks and fortified walls. Now little remains of the house,
but two levels of earthwork defences and a certain amount of the walls still survive. |
Castle Rising
|
|
Situated in the centre of extensive earthworks, the castle keep still
stands to it's full height. It was built in the 12th century, and was once palace
and prison to Isabella, the 'She-Wolf' of France, dowager Queen of England. |
