Robert Armstrong
Robert Armstrong was born in 1900 in Newbiggin and Christened at St. Bartholomew's Church.
His father was William John Armstrong and his mother
was Annie (maiden name unknown). Robert was the youngest of
their five children and known to everyone as Bobby
He worked for the National Coal Board. When I was a little girl
I used to wave to him going past the end of our road on the
"Tankie" - the train used for transporting the coal.
Now the railway line, like the Newbiggin coal mine, is long gone.
Bobby died in 1974 and was buried overlooking the sea in the Churchyard of St. Bartholomew's
in Newbiggin.
The photo shows Granddad as a boy in the Young People's Band at the Salvation Army,
Newbiggin.

Mary Alice Dent Armstrong
Mary Alice Dent Armstrong was the daughter of Alice
(nee Dawson) and Edward Dent Armstrong. In this photo she appears to be
too young to sit properly, so she can't have been very old at the time.
She had three brothers: Edward Dent Armstrong, born in 1900, Robert Dent Armstrong, who
died as an infant in 1901, and a third, also called Robert Dent Armstrong who was born in
1906. All were born in Newbiggin. Dent was the maiden
name of Edward's mother and has been used as a middle name in our
family ever since.
Grandma Armstrong was a wonderful cook, I wish I could make
pies and bread as well as she could.
Mary Alice died in 1979 and was buried at St.
Bartholomew's Church, Newbiggin.
