Isle of Man - East
Onchan
Onchan is where David comes from. Located on the east coast, just
north of Douglas which is the Manx Capital, sits little old Onchan Village. The
picture on the left shows the oldest part of Onchan, the Butt with St. Peters church in
the background. The photo on the right is Onchan old School, one of the buildings
'down the Butt'. |

Laxey
|
Laxey is located further north up the Island's east coast and is home to
the Isle of Man's most famous landmark. The Laxey Wheel,or The Lady Isabella, is an
overshot water- wheel of 72½ feet diameter, built in 1854 to pump water out of the Lead
mines which had been sunk to depths below the water table.
Laxey is also the place that you can catch the Electric Tram to the summit of Snaefell,
the Island's highest peak, and it's only mountain with a height of 2036 feet. |
Castal-yn-Ard
The Isle of Man has a rich Viking heritage. There is Tynwald, the Island's ancient seat of government which was
formed by the Vikings over 1,000 years ago in 979, and several burial grounds such as this
one at Castal-yn-Ard. Formed in the shape of a Viking Longship, it must have been for
the burial of an important person.
Also see Old Tynwald, and The Meayl Circle. |
