Tynwald - St. Johns
St. Johns is the home of Tynwald Hill, a tiered hill built using soil from
all of the different parishes of the Island. It is on this hill on 5th July each
year that all of the laws passed in the last year are read out to the populace, and any
petitions etc. can be handed to the government. This ancient democratic ceremony was
initiated by the Vikings in 979 and carries on to this day. See also Old Tynwald. |

The Arboretum National Park, in St. Johns. Planted with trees given
from all of the Manx parishes in 1979 to mark the Millennium of Tynwald. |
Peel
Peel is a fishing village on the west coast of the Island, though it is also known as a
city, due to the fact that it is home to St. German's cathedral, the ruins of which lie
within the walls of the Peel Castle.Peel is also
home to Odin's Raven a replica Viking longboat which was sailed from Norway to
the Island to celebrate the Millennium of Tynwald in 1979. |
Glen Maye
|
|
Just south down the coast from Peel lies Glen Maye, a pretty glen with a
waterfall. |
Niarbyl
|
Just a little further down the coast again, and you come to Dalby, turn
right down a lane towards the sea and Niarbyl. There's not much there, thatched
whitewashed cottages, a path to walk round the coast, and of course the rocks and the sea. |
