Isle of Man - TT Races
To those of us that were born on the Isle of Man, the TT Races, TT by the way
stands for Tourist Trophy, are simply a part of life like Tynwald.
Living in Onchan, when I was young I used to go to watch at Hillberry, a sweeping
right-hander preceded by a long downhill straight. Standing behind the wall on the
left side of the road, just before the corner, you feel that you could just reach out and
touch as the bikes pass, well into the breaking area, but still travelling in excess of
100mph.
During the first two weeks in June each year the quiet, sedate Isle of Man becomes the
Road Racing Capital of the World.
The first week is for qualification, and practise, which are run at ungodly hours so
the roads are kept open for the most part of the day.
The weekend sees the first races, and of course Mad Sunday, on which everyone rides the
course, the mountain section is made into about 13 miles of no limit one-way street.
The races continue into the second week, including sidecars, and many sizes of bikes.
The big one however is on the last race day, the Senior TT is the most prestigious race of
the meeting.
Anyway there follows some of my photos of the event in recent years, please click on
